Danger Signs: ABCDE Rules for early detection of Melanoma

What are the Danger Signs:

  • Check your body routinely for any Mole
  • If you noticed any Mole with any abnormal shape, color, or a rapid increase in size, call us at 210-698-6777 for an appointment with our Dermatologist

According to Dr. Ghohestani, a dermatologist with years of experience in treating cancerous lesions and Malignant Moles: “everyone should be aware of danger signs for Melanoma”. No moles should be subject to freezing or laser without determining whether it’s a benign or a malignant?

Skin protection against excessive sun exposure is highly recommended, especially if you live in San Antonio, Boerne or any other parts of South Texas where there is a higher amount of UV radiation. Malignant Melanoma is a fatal skin cancer characterized by abnormal proliferation of melanocytes. Dr. Ghohestani encourages the use of the “ABCDE rule” to detect malignant melanoma.

Finding any of these danger signs on your skin should prompt you to see a Dermatologist to ensure the pigmented lesion is not malignant.

It is important to not wait for a long time before seeing a dermatologist if you suspect skin cancer.

Danger Signs:

A (ASYMMETRY): when one part of a mole or birthmark does not match the other side.

B (BORDER): The edges of a mole are irregular, ragged, notched or blurred.

C (COLOR): The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of red, white or blue.

D (DIAMETER): The mole is larger than 6 millimeters across (about ¼ inch – the size of a pencil eraser).

E (Evolution): There is a rapid growth of a mole.
